What Is SEO?
SEO (search engine optimization) is the practice of improving your website’s visibility in search engines. With a tailored strategy, we help you improve your rankings and attract high-quality organic traffic that delivers lasting results.
How Does Search Engine Optimization Work?
Search engine optimization means getting a website to rank as high as possible for carefully selected search queries, chosen based on the industry and goals of the business, organization, or website.
In practice, SEO combines a range of techniques that help a website earn a spot among the top results on Google’s search engine results pages (SERPs).
What Does It Mean to « Optimize » a Website?
Optimizing a website means adapting it so it ranks well in search engines like Google. The payoff: more online visibility and more visitors.
In most cases, this refers to on-page SEO, meaning everything that happens directly on your site: content, keywords, title tags and other HTML tags, site structure, and so on. The goal is to make your site easy for Google and other search engines to understand.
If you don’t have a background in SEO or web development, it’s well worth bringing in a professional to help.
How Long Does SEO Take to Work?
It depends on the strategy. With paid search (Google Ads), your ads can start showing in search results within about a day, once Google has reviewed and approved them.
Organic SEO is a longer-term effort, and it takes more time for a site to climb the organic results. Google itself says SEO improvements generally take four months to a year to deliver their full benefit, although early gains often show up within the first few months.
The timeline also depends on your website’s age and how competitive your target keywords are.
What Is a Title Tag For?
Every page on a website has a “title” tag, and many SEO specialists agree that if you could optimize only one element of your site, it should be your page titles.
The tag looks like this: <title>Your Page Title</title>. It appears in the browser tab and, more importantly, as the clickable headline in search results. Since it’s the first thing searchers see, it needs to be compelling and make people want to click.
For example, a page on this topic might use the title tag “Title Tags: 5 Tips to Get More Clicks.”
To optimize a title tag, include your target keywords (and close variations), make every title unique, and give searchers a clear reason to click.
Aim for roughly 50 to 60 characters. Google truncates titles based on pixel width (about 600 pixels on desktop), so wider characters take up more room.
What Is a Meta Description For?
Think of the meta description as the title tag’s little sibling: on search engine results pages (SERPs), it appears just below the title and gives searchers more detail about what’s on the page.
For example, a meta description might read: “Title tags are critical for SEO. They help your page rank and tell searchers what they’ll find on it.”
A good meta description accurately reflects the page’s content. Avoid stringing keywords together: it doesn’t help, and keyword stuffing can hurt you with search engines. Keep in mind that Google may rewrite the snippet using text from your page when it thinks that better matches the query.
What Does SERP Stand For?
SERP stands for search engine results page: the page of results a search engine displays after you run a query.
How Can My Business Get Seen on Google?
To show up on Google, you need to publish content people genuinely find useful, optimize your website for search engines, and run an effective link-building strategy to build your site’s authority.
How Do I Keep Search Engines From Indexing Certain Pages?
There are plenty of reasons a business might want to keep a page or an entire directory out of search results: thin pages that can drag down how Google’s quality systems assess your site, PDF files that duplicate existing pages, duplicate content, and so on.
You have several ways to tell search engines to leave those pages out:
- A noindex meta tag: add it to the page’s <head> section, like this: <meta name= »robots » content= »noindex »>
- HTTP headers: to keep a whole directory or non-HTML files such as PDFs out of the index, send an X-Robots-Tag header, for example in your .htaccess file on an Apache server: Header set X-Robots-Tag « noindex »
- The robots.txt file: for example, [User-agent: * Disallow: /ref] tells crawlers not to crawl URLs that start with /ref. Note that robots.txt blocks crawling, not indexing: a blocked URL can still appear in results if other sites link to it, and Google can’t see a noindex tag on a page it isn’t allowed to crawl.
How Do I Optimize My Website?
For search engines to understand your site properly, it needs to be optimized the right way. The main areas to work on include metadata, content, authority, performance (speed and Core Web Vitals), and secondary channels such as your business listings and social profiles.
A word of caution: don’t over-optimize your site for search engines. Google can detect manipulative tactics such as keyword stuffing and may penalize the site.
What Does It Mean to Crawl a Website?
A crawler (also called a spider or bot) is a program search engines use to browse websites automatically. It explores pages, analyzes their content (text, images, videos, links, and more), and passes that information along so the pages can be indexed and appear in search results.
The name comes from the way these bots “crawl” from link to link across the web. Google’s main crawler, for instance, is called Googlebot.
Do I Need a Blog for SEO?
Keeping a blog updated with news, tips, or educational content for your potential customers isn’t mandatory for SEO. It is, however, highly recommended: it keeps your site active, gives visitors relevant content, and reinforces your brand and your expertise in your field.
Search engines, Google in particular, put more and more emphasis on content quality, relevance, and freshness. A regularly updated blog makes it easier to meet those criteria and improves your site’s visibility. It also lets you target a wider range of keywords, attract traffic on topics related to your business, and encourage people to share your content naturally.
Is My Site Indexed by Google?
To check whether your site is visible on Google, type “site:yourdomain.com” into the search bar. If your pages show up, Google has found and indexed them. That doesn’t mean they’ll rank among the top results, though. For a more precise view, check the Page indexing report in Google Search Console.
Do H1, H2, and H3 Tags Matter for SEO?
Yes, heading tags (H1, H2, H3, and so on) matter for SEO.
They structure a page’s content, make it easier to read, and help search engines understand the topics it covers.
The H1 tag marks the page’s main title, while the others mark subsections. A clear hierarchy with relevant keywords improves both readability and SEO.
